I am addicted to signing up for things.

When I changed email addresses lately I kept a log of all of the things that I changed over. I could think of about 30 off the top of my head. And that list grows every day.

The biggest culprit is ‘social networking services’. You know the ones- meet exciting new people! Reconnect with old friends! Become an online celebrity! Only problem is, once I sign up, the first thing I do is make sure that I can’t be found (easily; my motto is ‘you’ll find me if you want to’).

Once I’ve done that, I start using the site, only to find that I don’t have the desire to prove the length of my e-penis (by adding ‘friends’), or the attention seeking behaviour to get noticed by other strangers. So I test it for a while and then move on to the next one.

It might sound to those that know me that what I’m talking about is low self esteem. It’s actually the opposite. What did the cartoon character Daria say? “I don’t have low self esteem; I just don’t have esteem in other people”. It’s more like that. I’m comfortable with who I am, and I don’t need others to pump up my tires.

But I doesn’t stop me signing up. Oh, the perils of being an early adopter.
