There has been discussion on Gamerchix about different community tools… the 3 discussed have been Myspace, Live Spaces and my.1up.com. Seeing as I had not signed up for any before, I signed up for them all to compare. They will all fight for my affection… possibly with tridents.
My main criteria? Individuality and laziness. This is my blog. Flickr does my photos. If they can accommodate these without me having to double up when l want to put something everywhere I’ll be happy.
Observations so far:
Myspace
+More users than the rest
- Nobody I know actually uses it, and nobody I went to school is in it… so that scratches it as a networking tool for people I already know
+ Biggest ability to customise to make your own ‘look’, with backgrounds and add- ins
- I have never seen a good- looking MySpace page. Prove me wrong, children… prove me wrong
- No way to put my RSS feeds of my blog or my photos, because they don’t allow Javascript
Live (formerly MSN) Spaces
+ Integration with my 360
- All pages look the same
+ Some customisation of backgrounds, modules
- you are limited to what MS provides you… can’t import images to use in the space
+ can have only what you use in it… if I don’t want a blog, for example, I can remove it
+ I know some people who use it
- Not Mac friendly… when I use computers I swing both ways
+ Can put in an RSS of my blog
+? Can post from Flickr… not sure where to
- Their performance seems up the creek right now since the name change
my.1up.com
+ It’s for gamers!
- It’s for gamers only
- Not many members
+ can have my Gamertag as a username and allows me to link to it
-Very little customisation
+ Layout is easy to read
+Can add feeds from 1up.com sites
- Can’t add feeds from other sites
